Getting To Know You - Christine Guhl-Sadovy

NJUA is proud to profile NJUA members to learn more about one another.

We are pleased to spotlight BPU President Christine Guhl-Sadovy, who joined the BPU as commissioner earlier this year. In September, she succeeded the late Joseph Fiordaliso, a commissioner since 2005 and the Board president since 2018.

Where did you grow up?

Trenton

Any siblings, spouse, children, pets?

I have a sister, a 9 year-old son named Julian, and two dogs - Oreo and Rooster.

What drew you to becoming a BPU Commissioner?

I became interested in working at the BPU through my work in clean energy advocacy. I quickly realized the potential that this agency could have to transform how we use energy and help mitigate climate impacts. And then when Governor Murphy got into office I knew I wanted to work at the BPU to help advance his clean energy agenda. Since I started here as a staff member in 2018 I have learned so much about what the department does in addition to our clean energy policies and programs from helping people who need assistance to pay their energy bills to ensuring everyone has access to high speed internet.

What accomplishments, either personal or at the BPU, are you most proud of?

My greatest personal accomplishment is my son, Julian, who makes me so proud every day. In my professional life, it’s hard to pick one thing I’m most proud of working in Governor Murphy’s Administration. I would have to say the individual project I’ve been a part of is New Jersey’s offshore wind program because I started my career in clean energy advocating for offshore wind development. It was nearly 14 years ago when the Offshore Wind Economic Development Act was signed, but it wasn’t until Governor Murphy took office that we as a State advanced offshore wind. To come full circle and be the cabinet member helping to lead the New Jersey’s offshore wind program is really the opportunity of a lifetime.

What were/are some of the biggest challenges facing the BPU in 2024?

The BPU has no shortage of work ahead of us in 2024 so making sure we are fully-staffed is a big priority. We’ve done a lot to staff up under the Murphy Administration, but we’re always looking for talented people to join our team.

What are you most looking forward to in the year ahead?

It’s really hard to pick one thing. We have so much to look forward to, starting with the 3rd offshore wind solicitation results and opening the 4th solicitation to the expansion of community solar. We are developing the 2024 Energy Master Plan and working on a study to ensure an equitable clean energy transition. We’re also bringing government to the residents of New Jersey and hosting energy assistance events throughout the state to make sure anyone who needs help paying their bills can get that help. I’m so proud of everything this department has been doing and will continue to do throughout the next year.

What is your current Netflix obsession/what book are you reading?

I really like the Great British Baking Show and I just finished reading Lessons in Chemistry, by Bonnie Garmus.

If you were only allowed to listen to one singer/band for the rest of your life, who would it be?

I’m sure it sounds cliché being from New Jersey, but I love Bruce Springsteen.
