Gov. James J. Florio (Posthumously)

The New Jersey Utilities Association proudly announces that its 2023 Distinguished Service Award honoree is the late James J. Florio, Governor of New Jersey from 1990–1994.
As the Governor of New Jersey, Jim Florio was responsible for a wide variety of initiatives, many of which led to significant changes in New Jersey public policy and governance. He also served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1975-1990, where he authored the Comprehensive Environmental Response Compensation and Liability Act, known as the “Superfund” law, to clean up the most polluted sites in the country. He was also a NJ Assemblyman from 1969-1975 and served in the US Navy for 20 years, achieving the rank of Lt. Commander. Most recently, he was a Founding Partner in the law firm of Florio Perrucci Steinhardt Cappelli Tipton & Taylor LLC.
Born in Brooklyn, NY, he was a champion and cheerleader for his adopted state of New Jersey and was passionate about the issues that affect its success. Governor Florio was a trusted partner of the New Jersey Utilities Association and we are proud to present his award posthumously at the NJUA’s 108th Annual Conference June 1st at Seaview Resort in Galloway.
