Getting to Know: Kevin O'Connor

Kevin O'Connor is Veolia New Jersey's Vice President of External Affairs. he was profiled for the 2025 second quarter edition of the NJUA member newsletter.

Please tell us about your position.

My team oversees all legislative policy matters on the state and local government levels. In addition, I also lead the strategic planning and execution of community relations for both regulated and non-regulated companies in New Jersey.

How did you get into this field?

Some may think I am a dinosaur but I came up through the ranks at my company, which has been named Hackensack Water, United Water, Suez and now Veolia. I enjoy navigating complex and difficult issues where I get to connect with customers and various stakeholders in the water industry. Every day I get to take a new and exciting journey to bring new and impactful ideas forward in a rapidly evolving industry.

What accomplishments are you most proud of?

I am most proud of having an impact on the day-to-day lives of our customers and working with local and state government officials to ensure water service that is safe, reliable and affordable. In fact, our work with the administration, state Legislature, NJUA and other water utilities in the state to help pass the lead and copper legislation is a prime example of impacting the community. I am also proud of our work in the community and with local schools to expand opportunities for the workforce of tomorrow.

What drew you to working in the water industry?

I like to get wet! Seriously, I have been one of the most fortunate people to work in a collaborative culture, focus on providing the community with a service that is vital to their health and well-being, and having a leadership role where I can utilize my skills to make an impact and bring value to the community and our company. It is something I truly enjoy!

What are you most looking forward to this year?

The challenges ahead are both daunting and thought-provoking. The new water quality parameters around PFAS, Lead and Copper and Legionella will create new regulation and new legislation. It will be a challenge just to continue to refine our strategy and approach to meeting all current and future customer water needs.

How do you relax?

Watching the New York Giants. Although the last decade has not been that relaxing! Otherwise, that word is not in my vocabulary. Regulatory and Legislative Affairs is a full-time sport and it requires full-time commitment and body armor!

Favorite Jersey performer?

Bruce Springsteen. Is there really anyone else?

Li Wang
