NJUA Supports Energy Affordability Through Customer Efficiency Programs
New Jersey Utilities Association, its members and the 38,000 men and women delivering safe, reliable and affordable services to each to the state’s 9.5 million residents and businesses, appreciate the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities’ (NJBPU) continued focus on energy affordability.
In fact, our members look forward to continuing to work with the NJBPU to deliver energy efficiency programs that help customers manage energy use and utility costs while taking the opportunity to provide input on the BPU’s proposed Triennium 2.5 framework.
New Jersey's energy efficiency programs have achieved significant success, ranking #8 in the 2025 American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy State Energy Efficiency Scorecard, which marked the state’s return to the top 10 for the first time since 2008. This ranking reflects the state's efforts to reduce energy demand, deliver savings, and ensure long-term bill stability for ratepayers.
The programs have resulted in substantial energy savings, greenhouse gas emission reductions, and support for New Jersey's clean energy goals. The NJ Board of Public Utilities (BPU) has set new targets for savings to reach 2% annually in the 2026 and 2027 program years, demonstrating the effectiveness of these programs in delivering results.
“Energy efficiency is one of the most practical, low-cost tools available to support affordability,” said Richard Henning, president and CEO of NJUA. “These programs are already delivering measurable value for customers and communities by helping to reduce overall energy use and manage demand, which benefits customers across the state, not just those who directly participate.”
Energy efficiency programs also support economic activity across New Jersey, including a broad network of contractors, trade allies, and union affiliated workers delivering projects in local communities. Maintaining a stable and consistent framework will be important to support customer participation, workforce continuity, and to build on the progress already made for customers and communities across New Jersey.
